Love as Math-e-Magician of Equations

The world around us runs on an invisible, unbroken promise; everything must eventually balance out. Whether we observe the cosmos through a telescope, study the tiny movements of particles under a microscope, or simply look at the daily rhythms of our own lives, we find a steady, guiding hand maintaining perfect proportions. This state of balance is what scientists call equilibrium; a state where opposite forces are perfectly balanced, and what biology terms homeostasis, the way a living thing keeps its internal environment stable.
At its core, the universe operates as a master math-e-magician, constantly fighting the unseen battle to prove a singular, beautiful truth, no matter how different the two sides of a situation look, the Left-Hand Side (LHS) will always equal the Right-Hand Side (RHS). It is a cosmic law that operates quietly in the background of our lives, ensuring that for every action, there is an equal reaction, and for every loss, there is an inevitable, calculated gain.
We can see this universal math playing out in the simplest everyday things, like the steady glow of a fluorescent tubelight. Inside that glass tube, billions of tiny particles called electrons stream from one corner to the other. As they race across, they constantly bump into gas atoms, transferring their energy in a series of chaotic, unseen exchanges. We do not see the collisions; we only see the beautiful, steady light that results from them. On the LHS of this natural equation, you have invisible friction and collision; on the RHS, you have visible light. The appearance is entirely different, but the value is exactly the same. The universe operates on this exact same principle with our personal experiences. We often feel like we are constantly giving, losing, or running on empty. However, just like a vacuum in physics cannot stay empty and naturally pulls the surrounding air inside, the empty spaces in our lives eventually draw in new experiences, wisdom, and strength. The "loss" on your LHS is always calculating the exact "gain" required for your RHS, proving that nothing is ever truly lost; it is simply part of a grand, hidden equation.
This principle is vibrantly alive in the natural world, specifically in the phenomenon of trophic cascades within an ecosystem. Consider the reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone National Park. For decades, the park’s ecosystem was unbalanced; without predators, the deer population exploded, stripping the land bare and driving away birds and beavers. The reintroduction of the wolf, a "painful" predator to the deer, seemed like a negative force on the surface. Yet, this necessary friction balanced the equation. The deer population stabilized, the vegetation grew back, the rivers changed course due to stabilized banks, and life returned in abundance. The immediate loss of a few deer (LHS) equaled the miraculous regeneration of an entire geographical landscape (RHS). The pain of the hunt was the necessary cost for the survival of the whole.
In our own human history, we see this balance in the life of Nelson Mandela.
He spent 27 years in prison, an unimaginable "loss" of time, freedom, and comfort. To any observer, the LHS of his life seemed tragically empty, filled only with suffering and isolation. Yet, the universe was quietly building an RHS of equal magnitude. That immense sacrifice cultivated a depth of patience, wisdom, and moral authority that eventually dismantled apartheid and united a fractured nation without a civil war. His personal pain was not a waste; it was the exact weight required to tip the scales of history toward peace. Just as in the retail industry, where stock replenishment requires sending old inventory back to make room for the new, Mandela had to sacrifice his personal freedom to create the space for his country’s freedom.
This act of letting go, making sacrifice and creating space is also the secret to clearing our spiritual debts, or karma. Across many faiths, including Islamic traditions, intentional discipline and self-restraint, such as fasting or dedicated prayer, are used to master the self and balance our spiritual scales. True discipline is a form of self-fighting, where we work hard and serve others without expecting anything in return. This selfless effort acts like a fire that burns away past mistakes and purifies our intentions. However, the universe also warns us to respect the boundaries of our physical bodies. The body has its own strict survival metrics, and if we push ourselves too hard and cause the body to suffer under the excuse of discipline, we break the math. The body accumulates this stress as a negative balance on its ledger, which eventually rebounds to punish the mind and soul with exhaustion and sadness.
True equilibrium cannot be achieved by destroying one part of ourselves to feed another; both sides must balance harmoniously.
The delicate internal balance means that our heart, body, mind, and soul are deeply connected, constantly absorbing shocks for one another. When the mind is heavy, the body feels tired; when the body is hurt, the soul cries out. They are always hurting to protect each other, balancing the inner equation so that one single part doesn't collapse under the weight of life. This makes pain an unavoidable and crucial glue in human life. Pain is perhaps the single most powerful feeling that strips away our pride, reminds us of our limitations, and turns our thoughts toward God and something bigger than ourselves. Because of this, human beings do not truly bond just by celebrating victories; we bond when we share our scars. We come together to understand each other’s wounds and find ways to relieve them. Pain is a natural part of the human psyche that must be accepted rather than feared, allowing it to process itself with grace within the cosmic math.
It is through this very lens that we come to understand why love brings the deepest pain of all. We see this beautifully depicted in the movie, Arrival (2016). The protagonist, Louise Banks, is given the gift of seeing her entire life from start to finish, including the future birth of her daughter and the crushing tragedy of losing her to an illness at a young age. Despite knowing the immense, inevitable pain that awaits her (LHS), she willingly chooses to walk that path, to embrace the love and the joy of those few years (RHS). She accepts that the pain is not a punishment, but the necessary price of a love that profound. She chooses to feel it all, understanding that the willingness to carry the pain is what gives the love its meaning.
This profound ache does not happen because our loved ones intentionally hurt us, but because we willingly choose to open our hearts and feel the heavy weight of existence together. This deliberate willingness to carry each other's burdens transforms raw pain into the loving supportive bond of human life. The universe delivers this spark of connection with miraculous timing, arriving at the exact right moment just when you believed everything you did was wrong.
In that instant of despair, God uses the lens of love to show you exactly why your painful past was necessary and right. While it may not solve every earthly problem completely or absolutely, the magical formula of life suddenly clicks into place, making us feel vibrantly alive and genuinely happy. In the end, the fleeting pleasure of an easy path pales in comparison to this cosmic truth, the long-term happiness of overcoming deep pain alongside someone you love is the most beautiful, balanced equation the universe will ever solve.
No matter how the cosmic math shifts, keep your love handy, always, for the miraculous moment of the most beautiful mirror to arrive.
“Love is the ultimate outlaw. It just won't adhere to any rules. The most any of us can do is to sign on as its accomplice.”
